Dr. Susan Lim - Raising Funds For A Cause

The compassion that Dr. Susan Lim of Singapore has for her country is revealed in the work that she has done. In addition to her role as a surgeon and researcher, she is a strong advocate for learning and has donated to a variety of educational initiatives and programs. These include the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, Raffles Institute Scholarship Fund, Singapore Chinese Girls School Education Fund and NUS Alumni Association Chee Phui Hung Endowment Fund and has even provided bursaries for underprivileged children  for education including the son of her first liver transplant patient (Click here to view).  Most recently, she has set up a scholarship for medical students at Trinity College, University of Melbourne (Click here to read). This passion is infectious as she travels around the world, sharing her story and bringing others on board. In Singapore, about one in twelve is dealing with diabetes. Education and insulin have made the disease manageable. However, the cure is still to be found. Dr. Susan Lim's surgery experience sparked her idea to find a cure through cell transplantation. Diabetes Is A Worldwide Issue - Dr. Susan Lim

For Dr. Susan Lim, Singapore was the reason she began searching for a cure for diabetes. However, the issue extends far beyond the borders of her homeland. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 285 million people worldwide lived with diabetes in 2010. The numbers are expected to rise. By 2030, WHO estimates that more than 400 million people will suffer from the disease. If a cure can be found, the entire world can benefit. This is the motivation that drives Dr. Susan Lim to find funding for research.

Dr. Susan Lim - Research Extends Beyond Diabetes

If the research is successful it will also extend to many diseases beyond diabetes (click here for video). Dr. Susan Lim of Singapore stated at the INK Conference that it may be used to cure heart disease, liver disease and more. In addition, the successful use of adult stem cells will provide another alternative to embryonic stem cells which for many is morally and medically questionable.
